Florida Panthers fans have been throwing plastic rats onto the ice for decades. Why? A bloody stick, a 'Rat Trick' and a legacy that has lasted 27 years. RussoHockey looks at an interesting Panthers tradition – starting with Scott Mellanby.

Throughout that season, throughout that playoff run, hundreds of — sometimes more than a thousand — plastic rats were hurled onto the ice by Panthers fanatics at Miami Arena.After the season, the league instituted a rule preventing fans from throwing anything on the ice. But 27 years later, fans are again bringing toy rats into the Panthers’ current home, only typically waiting until game’s end to flood the rink.

At the time it was a bit of a disadvantage, but that’s what made that season so special. Still, there were times where it was like, ‘Uncle,’ because you were giving the other team the benefit of an unofficial timeout.
But so many players have solid careers and fizzle off when they end. Mellanby will always be remembered in South Florida, always be that guy who killed that rodent and helped make that season memorable for so many rat-tossing hockey lovers. The Panthers have some work to do now to get back in this series. But they have made the playoffs four years in a row and South Florida has embraced this franchise again.
