Strictly Come Dancing star Layton Williams says he 'deserves to be here', as he opens up on his experience on the hit dance competition and his 'unfair advantage'
BBC Strictly Come Dancing stars Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzmin have spoken about 'making a difference' and proving 'unfair' criticism wrong.
Layton shared with the M.E.N: "It's so weird when you're on the top and you want to celebrate, but some people can be so quick to say awful things. What would be lovely is for people to stop spreading hate and instead tell their favourites they love them instead. How much nicer would that be? I get that some people don't like me and that's fine, but take that energy and put it to good use, instead.
"We have had loads of messages from teachers and parents of queer kids who are telling us they feel they can wear and do whatever they want because of seeing us on screen," Layton explains. "I think it's a very beautiful message," Nikita, 25, adds of Layton's strength. "We're not really doing it on purpose, we're just being ourselves. The more you normalise people being whatever they want - whether it's by wearing wigs or make-up - the better it's going to be for everybody."
Nikita, who has previously danced with Tilly Ramsay and Ellie Simonds on the show, wasn't phased when asked to be part of a same-sex duo. He believes it's even helped him grow as a dancer. "I was maybe a bit too excited but the longer I stay in the competition, the more I'm learning to just get on that dance floor and breathe."
