The Business and Trade Department has been in talks with JLR for more than a year on building a new gigafactory with an original site proposed in Coventry, before more concrete plans being put forward in Somerset.understands that the Government has made an offer to the company, which had reportedly been demanding £500m in state subsidies to assist with energy costs and research development.
JLR has yet to make a decision between establishing a new battery factory in the UK or in Spain, which is hoping to lure businesses with attractive government subsidies to build battery factories. As Britain’s biggest car manufacturer, where JLR decides to build its battery factory will be a key test in regards to the future ofWhile sources refused to say whether a deal had been agreed, Government insiders are hopeful that JLR will locate its new factory in Somerset.
Adrian Mardell, JLR’s chief executive, said last week that Tata was “looking at the final determination” on where to locate its factory, but warned that the UK could miss out if there was a “cost disadvantage” in comparison with other countries.
