The measure was first implemented in 2013 in England
Over 1,800 badgers were culled in Northamptonshire last year as part of a controversial government strategy, figures have revealed. The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs released figures as part of a report on controlling the risk of bovine tuberculosis being spread by badgers.
as a contested measure to control the spread of bovine tuberculosis in cattle. Northamptonshire Badger Group describe it as an "unscientific, unethical, and ineffective" policy to curb the disease. As part of the ecosystem, badgers dig, forage and rejuvenate the soil while providing shelter and nesting sites for other wildlife. However, the group claim "for the first time in history" badger setts across England are "empty".
They also alleged local badger groups across counties that allow culling report cases of localised badger extinctions. Some of these setts can be hundreds of years old and form part of our natural heritage. Sally Jones is Groups Coordinator for Badger Trust. She said: "Local Badger Group volunteers give their time, energy and dedication to educate and inform the public about badgers, and to deliver services helping badgers on the ground.
Regulations and restrictions on cattle movements - as well as the development of a vaccine - are the best approach for the farming industry and our wildlife, according to analysis from the British Veterinary Association. Another study from December 2019 found that 94% of cases is spreads from cattle to cattle rather than being transmitted by badgers. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said it hopes to have a jab for cows by 2025 and eradicate bTB by 2035.
