Late run not enough to propel SDSU to conference tournament final; team could host WNIT after putting in bid
Nobody in the Mountain West had defeated No. 21 UNLV this season, and nobody still has after Tuesday night’s semifinal of the conference tournament against San Diego State at the Thomas & Mack Center. But the Aztecs came close, really close, before falling 71-68. And in some small way, that might be worth something.
They’ll play the winner of the late semifinal between Colorado State and Wyoming in the final Wednesday for an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.“Man, what a great game,” Rebels coach Lindy La Rocque said. “San Diego State, we knew it was going to be like that: a battle for 40 minutes. … I really admire what they do, the season that they’ve had. Unfortunately, obviously, someone had to lose the game.
But after making no 3-pointers through three quarters, the Aztecs suddenly couldn’t miss them — draining five in the fourth quarter, four in the final 2½ minutes, three in the final 30 seconds. They scored 27 points in the fourth quarter against a team allowing 62.5 per game. Down four with 31.5 seconds left, Morris led with her elbow in turning to the basket and was whistled for an offensive foul. Down five with 22.4 seconds left, UNLV’s Kiara Jackson intercepted the inbounds pass.
