San Diego State coming off 12-win season with experienced returners, key additions, but success hinges on O-line performing
San Diego State football coach Brady Hoke has been around long enough to remember when fall camp was a survival test.Camp is more like Club Med now.
SDSU must replace a pair of first-team all-Mountain West players in left tackle Zach Thomas and right guard William Dunkle as well as left guard Chris Martinez, who transferred to Arizona State. Veteran guard Dominic Gudino, who replaced Martinez late in the season, is also gone. “I’ve really been impressed with their individual and their different group things, the drills that they’ve done,” Hoke said. “I’m very excited about where they’re at.
“We’re going to try to make it as game-like as we can,” Hoke said of the scrimmage. “By that time we’ll have a pretty good idea of where your depth is, how your team is going to come together and really have a mock game of all three phases, and the mental part of it also.” Fans will have to wait to see the midfield logo and other special markings, which will not go down until the season opener.Graduate transfer Braxton Burmeister started all 12 regular-season games last season at Virginia Tech, passing for 1,960 yards and 14 TDs and rushing for 521 yards and two scores.
