Ayala: For migrants, the cause of death wasn’t just heat stroke, it was public policy
The memorial site remembering the 53 migrants who died is decorated with flowers, candles and crosses — but also with bottles of water symbolizing how they lacked hydration or cooling.Along the U.S. Mexican border in the southern counties of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, migration and public policy long have intertwined with desert, rock and brush to create a death zone.
Others die en route. This week, 53 died a horrific death. The trailer they traveled in was found San Antonio’s Southwest Side near Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. It’s as old as human existence and apt to grow rather than slow as climate change creates more refugees.
