In addition to parked cars, the barn has hosted the couple's annual Wurstfest party, their kids' birthday parties, even lemonade stands.Cody and Michelle Koehler were designing their New Braunfels home when they turned their attention to where they'd park their cars. This was to be their dream house, and no ordinary garage would do.
All that, and it looks like a stunning piece of architectural art. In fact, the Doehne Oaks Barn, as they call it, recently won the Small-Scale category of the 2022 AIA San Antonio Design Awards presented by the San Antonio chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Finished in September 2019, the 1,100-square-foot barn took contractor Lyman Skolaut a year to build at a cost of about $125,000. It is made primarily of cedar with a preservative finish and a type of steel that forms a protective coating of rust when exposed to the elements.
“Almost everyone who sees it for the first time says it’s the coolest structure they’ve ever seen,” Cody said. “They want to know who built it and how we came up with the idea for it. We had an Amazon driver who thought this was our home, a tiny home.”In addition to a parking bay large enough for two cars, the barn consists of a dogtrot passage linking the garage space to the storage/workshop. A ship ladder leads to the second floor loft space for stargazing.
