Awaab Ishak: Housing boss said ‘refugees were lucky to have a roof over their heads,’ report reveals by LeahMahon_
THE HOUSING boss who failed to take measures to improve a mould covered flat where a toddler died said that refugees were lucky to have a roof over their heads, a shocking report has revealed.
The social housing landlord was revealed to have said it was “ok and acceptable” to live among damp and mould. The desperate family were “not seen at all” and their treatment was based off assumptions on who they were and how they lived and there was a “propensity by staff towards making the residents responsible for the situation”.
The Housing Ombudsman’s report comes after Michael Gove, the housing minister, announced new requirements that will make landlords study for qualifications in efforts to professionalise the sector. It added that the heartbreaking case of Awaab was “not restricted to his family’s experience,” meaning that other residents were suffering under RBH’s handling of damp and mould cases.
“The weakness in policies, repeated failures and failure to learn from complaints has led us to conclude there was wider service failure by the landlord in areas other than its response to damp and mould, including record keeping and communication.
