MacDermid, a natural defenseman who can play forward — and a feared fighter from either position — signed a two-year contract extension worth $1.975 million with the Avs before Tuesday’s game.

PITTSBURGH — The Avalanche security blanket that is Kurtis MacDermid was again among the first players on the ice for Wednesday’s practice at PPG Paints Arena — about 14 hours after he logged a team-low 3:47 in Colorado’s 6-4 victory over the Penguins. He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in July.

“I’m really excited, really excited to continue what’s been going on with this organization,” MacDermid told The Post. “I’m a piece to the puzzle and it’s been working out pretty well so far. That’s something we can continue to grow on here.” “He’s a big part of our team,” Bednar said. “Every guy has his role on our team and it’s an important one. Besides what he brings to our team in games, our guys love him. They know where he stands with everything, that he’s going to have their back at all times, in all situations.
