North Californian Austin Smotherman's five-year grind finally paid off last fall when he earned his PGA Tour card.
DALLAS — Texas is home to some of the best golf in the country. A handful of the biggest names on tour were born and raised in the Lone Star State. There’s one rising star, however, who hails from Northern California and is a part of the elite alumni base of SMU golf. It’s not Bryson DeChambeau or Harry Higgs. His name is Austin Smotherman. Austin Smotherman earned his PGA Tour card after he finished the 2020-21 season No. 25 in the Korn Ferry Tour points standings.
“He went out in the front yard one time and he hit a little plastic ball over the roof of our house,” said Austin’s father, Troy Smotherman. “He looked at me and I looked back at him in amazement.” “You hit a bad shot, you get a bad break in life or something, you have to understand you don’t have a choice. You have to go find it and play through,” said Austin.
