Journalists at the Austin American-Statesman and other Gannett newspapers strike over cost-cutting measures
Journalists from the Austin American-Statesman and some two dozen other Gannett newspapers went on strike Monday, June 5, 2023.Hundreds of journalists from Gannett newspapers, including the Austin American-Statesman, went on strike Monday in protest of cost-cutting measures and management practices which have left its newsrooms struggling to comprehensively cover local news in some of the United States' largest cities.
When she joined the paper in 2018, Moreno-Lozano said, the Statesman's newsroom included some 200 journalists. Now the number has closer to 50, she said. The strike took place on her last day of work for the paper; she is leaving the Statesman for a new job at KUT, Austin's NPR affiliate. The strike follows several tumultuous years for Austin's major daily newspaper, initially founded in 1871.
The deal made Gannett the largest newspaper chain in the country and ushered in a painful hunt for"efficiencies," including layoffs and furloughs, in newsrooms across the country including the Statesman, which unionized in 2020.

The mostly one-day strike coincided with Gannett’s annual shareholder meeting, during which the company’s board was duly elected despite the NewsGuild-CWA union urging shareholders to withhold their votes from CEO and board chairman Mike Reed as an expression of no confidence in his leadership. The strike includes journalists from Arizona Republic, the Austin American-Statesman, the Bergen Record, the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, and the Palm Beach Post.
