Telecommunications giant AT&T and Southern Methodist University have teamed up for a data science boot camp for nine students.
AT&T is paying for the training and the overlapping on-site internship. After the 12-week program ends, each participant who earns an SMU certificate for completing the on-campus boot camp and the internship will get to interview for permanent positions at AT&T after graduation.
AT&T's vice president for data science Mark Austin shakes hands with a Southern Methodist University student. Participants in the AT&T Data Science Scholars Program presented their findings to faculty and AT&T representatives on June 17 in the Gerald J. Ford Research and Innovation Building on the SMU Campus.
“This partnership is something that more businesses within D-FW are going to take a look at, because there’s just not enough data scientists coming out of universities at the moment,” Moore said. “It was such an amazing opportunity — I’d never heard about anything like it,” Amberly Rodriguez, a student in the program, said. “I wasn’t too sure I’d get in — I didn’t feel like I had that much experience, but I’m really happy AT&T took a chance on me.”Sydney Holder, pursuing an master’s of science in applied statistics and data scienceJordan Terrazas, pursuing a BS in mathematics
