But one member of the rotation, Luis Garcia, is off to a slower start.
. He threw 57 of his 91 pitches for strikes; all three extra-base hits he surrendered were on pitches located in the middle of the zone. To comply with MLB’s new pitch clock rules for this season, Garcia abandoned his dancing windup and reverted to the shorter throwing motion he utilized prior to 2020. He spent the spring working on his new mechanics and said on Friday that by now, the motion feels second nature.
Maldonado said that the righthander’s execution and fastball location against the Rangers were improvements from his previous two starts. Especially brutal was Garcia’s second start in Minnesota, when a dip in fastball velocity contributed to a plethora of hard contact balls batted to all fields.
