Astros insider: Series against red-hot Mariners looms
The Astros returned from the All-Star break to face a 19-day gauntlet of 20 games, including two against the Yankees and seven against the Mariners.
Immediately following a doubleheader sweep of the Yankees at Minute Maid Park on Thursday, the Astros flew to Seattle for a three-game weekend series against baseball’s hottest team. The Mariners closed the first half on a 14-game win streak, in the process whittling the Astros’ lead in the AL West to nine games.
“I’ve been saying they’re a good team for months,” Baker said. “I heard it’s gonna be a sellout crowd over there. Probably be very loud and rambunctious and, hey, you know, that's something that we go through all the time.”The Astros’ starting rotation against the Mariners will line up with José Urquidy on Friday, Justin Verlander on Saturday and Framber Valdez on Sunday. They will be relied upon to provide length with the bullpen stretched thin.
Baker said Montero is “in question” to pitch in Seattle. Phil Maton, Ryne Stanek and Héctor Neris each threw one inning Thursday, so the Astros would like to avoid using them Friday but might not have a choice.
