ARLINGTON — The Astros claimed outfielder Dillon Thomas off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday.
Houston transferred outfielder Jake Meyers to the 60-day injured list to open a spot on its 40-man roster for Thomas. The move is clerical and does not change Meyers’ status or alter the clock on his minor league rehab assignment, which began earlier this month. Thomas is a Houston native who attended Westbury Christian School. The Colorado Rockies selected him in the first round of the 2011 draft. Thomas made his major league debut for the Seattle Mariners last season and appeared in one game this season for Los Angeles. Thomas has taken just 13 major league plate appearances.
The Angels designated Thomas for assignment earlier this week, which exposed him to waivers. Houston’s rash of position player injuries forced it to act. Before claiming Thomas, the team did not have a healthy, non-major league position player on its 40-man roster. Thomas played all three outfield positions during his minor league career and slashed .264/.337/.400.
