An asteroid roughly the same size as a double decker bus will hurtle past the Earth tonight in one of the 'closest ever' encounters of its kind.
The Mirror reports that it'll be nothing more than a "near miss" and the closest approach will be at around 12.27am tonight. "But despite the very few observations, it was nonetheless able to predict that the asteroid would make an extraordinarily close approach with Earth," Davide said in a statement.The asteroid is thought to be between 3.5 and 8.5 metres across, and was first spotted by amateur astronomer Gennady Borisov just a couple of days ago.
It marked the world's first test of a planetary defence system designed to prevent a potential doomsday meteorite collision with Earth.
