The World Health Organization has found aspartame, a common sweetener found in Diet Coke, may cause cancer

A common artificial sweetener found in Diet Coke and hundreds of products has been ruled a "possible" cause of cancer.

The IARC has two more serious categories that they use: "possibly carcinogenic to humans", and "carcinogenic to humans". "The assessments of aspartame have indicated that, while safety is not a major concern at the doses which are commonly used, potential effects have been described that need to be investigated by more and better studies.

The WHO said that it and the IARC would continue to monitor new evidence, and encouraged independent research groups to study it.
