For 2023, the honour fell on celebrated photographer Emma Summerton, the fifth female photographer to have been given the commission since the calendar first appeared in 1964. Her predecessors include Annie Leibovitz, who shot it in 2016 and 2000, Inez Lamsweerde in 2007, Joyce Tenneson in 1989 and the first, Sarah Moon in 1972.
Summerton’s artistic vision, inspired by the wildlife and nature of her Australian childhood, as well as the female artists, writers, musicians and poets she has encountered along the way, came to her over two summers while working on the island of Hydra. Her calendar became a reflection of a lifetime gathering visual imagery in the catalogue of her mind; a culmination not just of her artistic self, but also her person and the empathetic rigour she deploys.
