Ash's quest to becoming the greatest Pokémon trainer was filled with trials and tribulations, but none so obvious as his first official gym battle.
While it may seem hard to grasp in the current age of Pokémon continuity, Ash was originally far from the greatest trainer in the world–one could even argue that he was one of the worst–and the reason why really boils down to the bad habits he was forming early on in his career, as shown during the events leading up to his first gym battle, which confirms exactly why it took Ash decades to become a champion.
Upon turning ten years old, Ash Ketchum wasted no time in becoming a Pokémon trainer–except, that’s not entirely true. Ash overslept for his appointment with Professor Oak and then showed up to said appointment in his pajamas. At this point, Ash isn’t off to a great start–and it doesn’t get much better from there. Upon venturing out into the wild with his Pikachu, it is immediately clear that Ash simply doesn’t know what he’s doing.
For someone who says they are committed to becoming the best Pokémon trainer in the world, this method of strengthening his Pikachu seems like a pretty half-assed and dishonest way for Ash to win his first gym battle. If, say, Ash was preparing Pikachu to take on the villainous Team Rocket and needed to give him a quick burst of energy to ensure everyone’s safety, that’s one thing, but that’s not the situation here.
This episode shows the underlying issue with Ash upon his start as a Pokémon trainer. Ash already had it in his head that he’d be the best, and that self-confidence soured into arrogance, making him feel like he didn’t need to earn his place. This leads to Ash hooking Pikachu up to a generator to get a quick burst of energy before taking on Brock rather than leaving with his Pikachu and training him more before challenging the seasoned trainer again.
