Councillors in Manchester called for a general election on the back of the decision to axe HS2
As Rishi Sunak took to the stage at Manchester Central Complex and delivered his controversial speech on HS2, less than 100m down the road, anger was brewing.
Labour members echoed her calls as they held up signs calling for a general election, with Coun Pat Karney declaring “levelling up is dead”. “It’s a simple message, we have been disrespected long enough and had our resources cut for long enough and we have not been offered a future of hope and optimism.”
“Levelling up is dead now in this country,” Coun Karney told the council chamber. “This government is a danger to Manchester and a danger to this country. Coun Ekua Bayunu, deputy leader of the Greens, put forward the motion which saw the council committing to expressing its support for those taking action to oppose the measures taken by the government. However, the Greens left the meeting disappointed as Labour’s amendment of the motion ‘significantly watered it down’, they said.
