Wednesday marks the Spurs’ final game this season at the AT&T Center, which means it could be Gregg Popovich’s final game in San Antonio
“There are those nights when I say. ‘What the hell am I doing here?’ ” Popovich acknowledged. “ ‘Do I need to do this?’ ”At age 74, Popovich is the oldest coach in the history of the NBA. He has accomplished all anyone could have hoped to accomplish in his 27 seasons, winning more games than any coach in league annals , five NBA championships and guiding Team USA to an Olympic gold medal to boot.
For those who have followed Spurs basketball for the past quarter century, the thought of Popovich walking away would be like the sun announcing its retirement. The Spurs have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs for the fourth season in a row, the longest drought San Antonio has ever known.
One might surmise this rebuilding stuff has made for a difficult assignment for a coach who could once count on 50-wins per season like the rest of us count on gravity.“To watch these guys develop has been really exciting,” Popovich said.
