In March of 2020, as the first case of the novel coronavirus's community spread was discovered in Harris County and schools went remote across the region and nation, Rob Wiseman was building student housing near the University of Houston. He had five duplexes, with a total of 40 bedrooms, under construction. And across the street, he had two single-family homes that he was also renovating with an eye to renting out to students.
As a result, residents were able to move into brand-new housing in October, and the shelter's clinic, offices and drop-in centers moved into renovated homes across the street. On Wednesday afternoon, residents hung out outside on a sheltered patio and grabbed bites to eat from a community space and kitchen that Covenant House installed in a trailer. The hens, named Chicken and Yo Sister, pecked quietly beneath the steps.
