Pop's longest-tenured assistant coach will be in OKC this season, marking another change for the 'Spurs Way'
Shooting coach Chip Engelland had a big hand in the Spurs’ 2007 and 2014 titles through his work with Manu Ginobili and others.The winningest coach in NBA history stood in the middle of the home locker room at the AT&T Center last March, giving a celebratory speech that was just about to wind down. But somehow, on the night he’d broken the league’s record for regular-season victories, it didn’t seem right to let Gregg Popovich have the last word.
He arrived in San Antonio as a shot doctor, but he evolved into much more than that. Once Parker, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and all of the assistants he outlasted moved on, Engelland became, in the words of a team source, “the keeper of the Spurs Way.” The Spurs’ front office, per its tight-lipped custom, declined comment on the matter, but the bottom line is that the organization and Engelland did not come to an agreement on a new contract.
Steve Kerr, who followed Engelland at California’s Pacific Palisades, attributed his NBA shooting prowess to working with Engelland. That led to gigs with the Pistons and Nets before the Spurs hired him in 2005. The ladder didn’t interest Engelland, though. He figured the Spurs Way suited him better, and the Spurs were glad it did. Would they have won a championship in 2007 without Parker’s ability to keep opposing defenders honest by respecting his jump shot? Would they have won another in 2014 without the incredible strides Leonard made between his rookie season and his third?
