The grassroots game will once again turbo charge
As this Lioness, albeit now an ageing matriarch of the pride, heard, tears streamed down my cheeks. It marked the end of a personal 49-year journey, to see the country I so proudly led for nine years as captain and countless years in ambassadorial roles, reach the pinnacle of the game I love – the Fifa World Cup Final.
The adrenaline will be pumping but they will have a plan, and if, by some odd quirk, the game pivots, they will move onto a different plan. They Watching at home with my husband, I will be a mess. Eight years later, as I led England into the first ever Uefa tournament final first leg, I could boast a crowd of nearly 6,000 in Sweden’s Ullevi National Stadium. And typically, of the day, the FA and top London clubs spurned the chance to host a European Nations Cup Final at Wembley or a prestige first division ground for the return leg. We ended up at the, in the game I affectionately named “The Battle of Kenilworth Bog” but still in front of a crowd of just under 3,000.
