Arlington ISD, Place 2 race: Dallas Morning News recommends
Melody Fowler has just led Arlington ISD’s efforts to hire a new superintendent and to beef up security one year after a fatal high school shooting. The district faces serious challenges, and she is better equipped than her challenger to meet them.
Fowler, a vice president at Arlington Baptist University, was elected to the Arlington ISD board in 2018. She won reelection in 2021 with 72% of the vote and became board president in 2022.Fowler, 65, has a long history with the district, serving over 18 years in capacities ranging from room mom to site-based committees, according to her.
It’s also true that 72.8% of Arlington ISD students are economically disadvantaged, compared with 60.7% statewide, according to the Texas Tribune, and that the district recently announced it plans to eliminate 275 positions because of the loss of COVID-era federal funding.Arlington ISD received a “B” from the Texas Education Agency in the most recent statewide ratings.
The district is also still healing. Last month marked one year since a student at Lamar High School shot and killed a classmate. Fowler said the district has spent more than $1 million on security updates since that event, including a new generation of metal detector that is more accurate and less likely to generate false alarms for things like metal binders.
Arlington ISD has managed to avoid many of the culture war controversies that have embroiled neighboring districts. Fowler credits the rapport among trustees, staff and community for that.Arlington ISD’s 55,000 students and 8,500 staff deserve trustees with the experience and connections to guide schools through serious challenges. Fowler appears to be that person.. Dallas Morning News editorials are written by the paper's Editorial Board and serve as the voice and view of the paper.
