'The only thing that matters to him is helping people': An Arizona veteran's journey from jail time, addiction to helping others

At the age of 19, Raymundo Perez decided to enlist in the U.S. armed forces to leave behind a troubled life in Los Angeles, California. Gangs, drugs and alcohol were bringing him down.

In August, Perez will be nine years sober — alcohol-free and drug-free. Getting to this point, however, was a battle of its own.In 2001, after serving the country for 15 months, Perez moved to Surprise, where he planned to return to daily life in a calm way. He soon found himself coping with drugs and alcohol.

“I never wanted to say anything. I just drank beer so I wouldn't be thinking about it all the time,” Perez said. "My oldest daughter had to see me in a bad state. She suffered a lot, and it is for the two of them that I decided to change my life to give them a good example, and never live as I did," Perez said.

Perez is one of many involved in helping deliver these opportunities to people currently in prisons and formerly incarcerated in Arizona., a nonprofit based in Phoenix that since 2018 has supported veterans coming out of prison and off the streets through a number of rehabilitation programs.
