Arizona lawmakers have repealed a decades-old state law forbidding sexual education that promotes a 'homosexual lifestyle.'
This week, the Arizona Attorney General's Office sent a letter to Speaker of the House Rusty Bowers and Senate President Karen Fann, informing the lawmakers that Attorney General Mark Brnovich's office would not intervene to defend the law.
The Senate passed the repeal 19-10 on Thursday. Democrat Sen. Sean Bowie was excused from the Senate for the day and did not vote. The chamber’s final vote was marked with emotional testimony from lawmakers.“Things could have been a lot different and I could have come out a lot sooner,” he said. “I didn’t understand the different things that I was going through as a young man.”“I often wondered, if they had the education, could their deaths have been prevented?” she asked.
“It’s intended to reflect that a certain lifestyle leads to the spread of a certain particular disease,” he said. It's unclear whether the lawsuit from Equality Arizona would vanish immediately. Change in sexual-education curriculum across the state won't occur immediately. Changes will depend on the district and charter school.
