Leading Fleet Street cartoonist godfreychurch has offered to repaint a Mickey Mouse mural designed to welcome children at an asylum reception centre after immigration minister Robert Jenrick ordered its removal
order to erase the wall art at the Kent asylum intake unit in Dover is “unnecessarily cruel” and claimed the minister is “blind of any decent moral compass”.
He hopes if the work is created, it will make Mr Jenrick ”think twice” about ”vandalising several professional national cartoonist’s work”’ to ”deny a vulnerable child something fun to look at”.of the asylum centre have been painted over following the order from Mr Jenrick. Guy Venables has offered to repaint murals at a Kent asylum centre that Robert Jenrick ordered to be removed – and has branded his order ‘cruel’. “Without being too highfalutin’ about this, one of the things that we [cartoonists] always try to do is to right wrongs or expose injustices and things like that, without trying to sound like superheroes.”
Mr Venables said it was not yet clear if the cartoonists will be permitted to travel to Dover to do the work over complications with access and criteria for people working in a child-only environment.
