The Appalachian Trail Conservancy moved its regional office to the historic Craighead House, the former summer home of one of the area’s most famous families.
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy has a new home in keeping with its purpose.
After a long restoration and conversion of the second floor to offices, the ATC moved into the Victorian home in early September, Tom Benjey, a board member with the Craighead House Committee Corp., told“We’re very pleased with having them as a tenant,” he told the news outlet. “The ATC is the kind of tenant we were looking for. They have a mission that melds with our mission.”
The award-winning author Jean Craighead George and her twin brothers, Frank and John, and spent their childhood summers in the 1920s and 1930s, exploring the fauna and flora surrounding their home on the Yellow Breeches Creek. George wrote a chapter about the Appalachian Trail in one of her books, Benjey told The Sentinel, one of the first pieces about the Maine-to-Georgia trail, he said.The president of the house committee’s board, John Coyle, told The Sentinel that having the conservancy as tenants will help pay the bills and is a great fit for the historic and scenic property.
