The contest is officially supposed to begin around June 10, with May remaining as a caretaker prime minister while a new one is chosen, but the jockeying for position started weeks ago as May's influence ebbed. May's departure does not change the situation in the British Parliament, which remains deeply divided over what should happen next in the process to fulfill voters' wishes to leave the EU. Parliament does not support a"no deal" Brexit but its ability to stop it may well be limited if the new leader chooses that course.
