The Morris & Essex and Gladstone Branch lines will not return to full service Monday, a week after storm damage closed the line in Maplewood. Crews working on that issue had to remove another tree from the tracks in South Orange.
Train service was cut to 22 towns in three counties after wind and thunderstorms felled a tree in Maplewood on the night of March 7, damaging support structures and tearing down overhead electric wires that power trains.
What that means for commuters is those who ride from stations between Hackettstown and Denville should use Montclair-Boonton Line trains. Enhanced service will operate on tM&E and Gladstone Branch tickets and passes will continue to be cross-honored on NJ Transit Raritan Valley Line and Montclair-Boonton Line trains, on NJ Transit buses and private carrier buses.
“In years past, any lengthy work or suspension was compensated by bus service to each station or on discounted fares to travelers, but neither has been provided in the case of both lines’ weather-related damage,” one commuter wrote in an email. NJ Transit recognizes and regrets the inconvenience that the rail outage has caused to customers, he said., that has added service to its routes to accommodate displaced rail commuters. Tickets and schedules are available on the Boxcar app, however NJ Transit tickets are not being cross honored.The Ridgeliner from Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit, offering five morning buses between 6 a.m. and 8:20 a.m., and three evening buses departing between 5 p.m. and 6:20 p.m.
