DALLAS — Pride Month is underway, and celebrations have begun around Texas. In keeping with annual tradition, The City of Dallas channeled the spirit of Pride with its raising of the Pride flag at Dallas Love Field and City Hall Plaza on Thursday.
“Dallas has a diverse Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer or Questioning community and is committed to supporting visibility, dignity, and equity for all people in the community,” Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Omar Narvaez said. “June has become a symbolic month in which LGBTQ+ persons, and supporters, come together in various celebrations of pride.”
Mayor Eric L. Johnson proclaimed June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in Dallas. The pride this community carries from the endless use of social movements to propel their image, the rainbow flag, also known as the LGBTQ+ pride flag or gay pride flag, has been symbolic of all that since the 1970s. In knowing the history, the City Council approved a resolution on June 17, 2020, which calls for the City of Dallas Official Flag to be replaced by the official City of Dallas Pride Flag during June.
Festivities were held on the Plaza at a noon ceremony. The City of Dallas LGBT Employee Resource Group, Dallas Police Department LGBTQ+ Liaison, Dallas Fire LGBTQ+ Liaison, the Dallas Mavericks and the Dallas Wings gave their support. Other facilities that are expected to fly the Pride flag are the Dallas Executive Airport, Jack Evans Headquarters, J. Erik Jonsson Central library, Fair Park and the Dallas Fire Rescue training facility. Further Pride Month support will come from City partners in displaying multi-colored lights of the downtown skyline from June 1-4.
