Temperatures of more than 35 degrees Celsius saw play suspended on outdoor courts at the Australian Open as the Heat Stress Scale reached its highest reading.
Organisers used to use the so-called Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, a function of temperature and humidity measured by the Bureau of Meteorology, as part of their extreme heat policy. However, since 2019 they have used their own scale, which ranges from 0-5 and takes into account air temperature, wind speed, humidity and radiant heat, to determine what measures to take against the weather.
At just after 1pm local time, the scale reached level 4, at which point players are allowed a 10-minute break during which they can leave the court and cool off at a specified point in their matches. Less than an hour later though, authorities were forced to suspend play on all courts without a roof except Rod Laver, Margaret Court and John Cain.
