Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana was guilty of committing a costly error against Bayern Munich.
As Bayern Munich celebrated their opening goal at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was probably praying that the turf would open up and swallow him.
Though United conceded a further three goals before the end, Onana, who made some smart stops in the second half, could not be blamed for any of the other goals that were sieved. Frailties within the defensive line in front of him were more worthy of attracting the blame. "The team were good, but because of me, we didn't win this game, so we just have to move on. This is the life of a goalkeeper and if we didn't win today, it's on me.
But after the manner in which he accepted full responsibility for his error against Bayern, he deserves credit. It takes guts to front up in the manner he did. It also highlighted his determination to make a name for himself at Old Trafford. "But you simply cannot let that goal in. Being United goalkeeper is the hardest position in English football.
Admittedly, Onana has not been helped by not having United's strongest back-four in front of him in recent weeks. However, the onus is now on him to prove that he can bounce back. His mindset and mentality suggest he will.
