In light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Alaska’s largest airport is preparing for the possibility of airlines using Anchorage to bypass Russian airspace.
Officials with Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport told Alaska’s News Source that as of Monday, the airport has not been contacted by any airline in that regard. However, officials say that some of the airlines have been contacting the airport’s ground handlers about the possibility of using Anchorage as a stopover to avoid flying through Russian airspace.
Airport officials say they’re communicating with airport ground crews to see if they could handle the extra load, should that become a reality.“ taking a look at meeting with our tenants, which includes the ground handlers or fuel supplier, you know, de-icing chemicals, to ensure that operationally, if there would be additional flights, how would we handle that,” said Trudy Wassel, business manager at the airport. “Those conversations are happening. Nothing has been confirmed at this time.
