On Monday afternoon, Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo announced that his state would be the first to recommend against vaccinating healthy children for Covid-19.
He did this at a roundtable event organized by Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis that brought together many of the leading skeptics of mitigation measures to slow the spread of the disease.
In search of the"why" and the"what now," I reached out to Steve Contorno, who covers Florida politics for CNN. After joining the DeSantis administration, he notably refused to wear a mask in the presence of a state senator with breast cancer, even after she asked him to. During his confirmation hearings, he would not say if he was vaccinated and declined to weigh in on the effectiveness of vaccines against coronavirus. At one point, Democrats walked out of the hearing as Ladapo continued to avoid their questions.
