Analysis: Trump’s assault on the truth reaches an unthinkable milestone

It’s not just that Trump attacks the media as the “enemy of the people” or that the media tends to come from more left-leaning backgrounds; it’s that they have completely polar-opposite mission statements.
My colleague Philip Bump has dispatched with the notion that people simply aren’t familiar with Trump’s falsehoods or that the media isn’t pointing them out enough. At one point in the 2016 campaign, for example, as many as half of Republicans said Trump wasn’t honest or trustworthy. But that’s also kind of the point. One of the potentially long-lasting effects of the Trump presidency is that it has shown politicians that it’s not necessary to be truthful, as long as your base stands by you. He has a pretty good chance of getting reelected in 2020, even as he’s spouting an average of more than 20 false or misleading claims per day.
