Amtrak reports on Mobile rail service project to Surface Transportation Board The passenger rail service provider reported to the Surface Transportation Board at a hearing Wednesday in Washington. After 18 and half years without a passenger train in Mobile many people are wondering when or if that service may return. So is the Surface Transportation Board.

The track project involves installing 3,000 feet of layover track. That is dependent on whether Amtrak can negotiate a land use agreement with the City of Mobile. Jessica Amunson who represented Amtrak at the hearing said those negotiations began sometime around the start of 2023. "As the mayor reported in his letter to the board this week Amtrak and the city are actively engaged in forward moving negotiations on a weekly basis,” said Amunson.
