Amazon's first JamesBond project post-MGM acquisition has been announced. 007's Road to a Million will be an Amazing Race-style competition show that will take contestants to iconic Bond locations around the world as they compete for cash.
The James Bond-themed game show, 007's Road to a Million, has officially been greenlit by Amazon for its streaming service. The series is inspired by the long-running film series based on the original Ian Fleming novels where the titular character treks across the world to fight global terrorists in over-the-top set pieces with magnetic charisma. The series first began in 1962 with Dr. No starring Sean Connery as the lead.
Earlier this month, Amazon closed on an $8.5 billion deal to buy MGM studios and its properties. The deal gives the e-commerce giant access to a tremendous catalog of films and TV shows dating back to the studios founding in 1924. This includes classic MGM films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Gone With the Wind, and An American in Paris, but also ongoing film series such as the Rocky spin-off Creed and James Bond.
MGM's Dom Bird will manage the eight-part series for the studio with the British company 72 Films producing it. While Amazon has promised that James Bond movies will remain theatrical releases, that clearly doesn't mean the entire franchise will remain exclusive to the cinema-going experience.
Daniel Craig's final film as James Bond proved to be an incredible success. Using its popularity, it is understandable that MGM and thus Amazon would want to capitalize on the series' buzz while still trying to figure out the direction of the over 50-year franchise.
