New software update will turn the Echo Show 15 into an Amazon Fire TV
Amazon has boosted the capabilities of the Echo Show 15, massively boosting the device’s video streaming capabilities.
The Echo Show 15 is the largest of the company’s smart displays, with a 15.6in screen. However, it’s ability to stream video was limited to a handful of services, including Amazon’s own Prime Video and Netflix. The new software upgrade for the device effectively turns the Echo Show 15 into an Amazon Fire TV, giving owners access to a much broader range of streaming services, including Disney+, Peacock, Hulu and the full range of Fire TV apps.The free upgrade brings the Echo Show 15 closer to a portable television, albeit one that can’t receive broadcast signals or display content from other devices.
It also gives the biggest member of the Echo family more of a reason for being, with many reviewers criticizing the device for failing to exploit the extra screen space that it offers over siblings such as the Echo Show 5 and Echo Show 8. Amazon is even bundling the device with its Alexa Voice Remote, allowing users to select shows without having to wade through onscreen menus or yell at the screen from a distance .
