🗺️ Groups, including Amazon, Google and National Geographic, are offering customers maps that show Crimea as Russian territory despite the United Nations continuing to recognise the region as Ukrainian following 🔴 Exclusive DavidParsley50

Many wall maps and atlases from global mapping groups Marco Polo and DuMont, and Franckh-Kosmos show both Crimea and Russian occupied areas in Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts as disputed territory following the sham referendums conducted in the Donbas region last year.

A spokesman for Amazon said the online giant would not be removing the contentious maps of Ukraine from sale. Dr Marnie Howlett, a lecturer at the University of Oxford’s department of politics and international relations and the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies, said: “There are two places that are contested in Ukraine currently: Crimea and Donbas.

“I created Stop Mapaganda! to informationally de-occupy Ukraine and show the citizens of European countries that they are being manipulated by these products.”The Washington-based organisation offers five versions of Ukrainian maps. While one recognises Ukraine’s territory as was established at its independence from Russia in 1991, the remaining four place Crimea in Russian hands while also under dispute, including a map produced for children.

Some companies try to bend the rules a bit, some comply with the relevant government’s diktats, but there is definitely no single rule. For some reason, neither Google or Bing Maps show Somaliland in any shape or form. So, a lot of ad hoc company rules are being applied. Dr Vlad Mykhnenko is an associate professor of sustainable urban development and research fellow at St Peter’s College, University of Oxford.

Leise Betts, a director of Maps Worldwide, said: “It has been brought to our attention that the data provided by AGT Geocentre is showing information that does not comply with internationally accepted boundaries in Ukraine.
