“For full recovery, the return of conventions and groups is essential, which continues to trail 2019 benchmarks like most major markets with full recovery not expected till next year,” Sherman said. The majority of those who came to the city last year — 27.1 million — were leisure travelers. About 4.6 million business travelers flew in, up from 3.3 million in 2020 but down from 7.1 million in 2019.
At the Menger Hotel across from the Alamo, occupancy has risen from the low 40s at the end of last year to the low 60s this year, said general manager Garvin O’Neil. Inflation and supply chain snarls continue to be challenging, with items such as shampoo bottles and room compressors taking longer to get and food and beverage costs rising, he said. The hotel has raised prices.
