A shot of caffeine could protect against Alzheimer's

Lattes, Americanos and cappuccinos are already the morning drink of choice for many, but there could be an extra health benefit in your daily jolt of espresso.

The compounds in espresso were found to destroy rogue tau proteins that gather in the brain and kill nerve cells, a process believed to be involved in the onset of Alzheimer's disease. In healthy people, tau proteins help stabilise structures in the brain, but when certain diseases develop, the proteins can clump together into fibrils.

To test the effects, researchers pulled espresso shots from store-bought beans, then used a scanning technique nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to characterise their chemical makeup.
