The groundbreaking play, one of the most performed in recent years, pairs a family's story with an onstage music group.
“When the band plays, regardless of the language, everyone jumps up, sings, nods; they do what they need to do,” Yew says. “That's the power of music; and that's why, in a very real and deft way, Lauren has placed a live band on the stage to actually provoke us to think that way, and to feel that way.”
“Sometimes the secrets that we keep, that information that we do not impart to our child, creates a huge gulf,” Yew says. “And it's a strangely beautiful and horrible thing, because we are giving the children a gift of a new start; but not knowing where they have come from, as a result of that, alienation [grows] between parents and children.”
“Eight years ago we had Obama,” Yew says. “A few years ago we had Trump, and that shifted radically: how do we survive this? And we did. We had COVID, and we survived. I don’t know what's in store for us for the next 10 years, but I know that we will survive in some great way, and that's what the play reminds me of.”
