Stanford guard Benny Gealer drives against Texas guards Marcus Carr, left, and Arterio Morris during Sunday’s game in Dallas.DALLAS — With time dwindling and Stanford trailing, Cardinal leading scorer Spencer Jones had to make a play to extend Sunday’s game against No. 7 Texas at the American Airlines Center. So the 6-foot-7 senior put his head down, chugged toward the rim and elevated for a layup.

“I’ve got a great staff behind me,” Terry said. “It’s not a one-man show with this. We got an experienced group of guys that I enjoy working with. We’re playing hard and working hard right now.” Allen and sixth man Sir’Jabari Rice did most of the heavy lifting in the first half. That duo scored 10 points apiece on a combined 8-of-11 shooting while the rest of the Longhorns totaled 11 points on 5 of 16.

Stanford adjusted and started played the passing lanes more aggressively. Texas in turn relied more on isolation ball. And the game turned. It was the response Texas needed, one led by two of the returning veterans who played a pivotal role on last year’s NCAA tournament team. Carr finished with a game-high 17 points, Allen added 15 and five assists and Rice popped for 15 off the bench. Texas assisted on 22 of its 28 field goals.
