The most important day in the education calendar, A Level results day is just around the corner

As students across Northern Ireland prepare to receive their A-level results on Thursday, many will already be preparing for their next steps.

But if you don't get the grades you were looking for, don't despair. There are several options available if you don't get the results you need to get into your preferred universities, from apprenticeships to other forms of education or resits. What if you want to appeal your results? Some students may be unhappy with their A Level grades, but thankfully there are ways to appeal the grades you receive.

Priority Review Service For students who have a higher education place on hold, CCEA offers a priority review of marking service. If you would like to request this service, it is important that you inform your school or college as soon as possible. The deadline for them to request a priority review is 24 August 2023.Access to Scripts Your school can request a copy of your exam paper.

Alternatively, you could accept your grades and go through the results day Clearing process instead. This is a service for universities that have places needing to be filled and students who want a university place. Resits Retaking your qualifications could be also an option. Just be certain that it is the route you want to take, and think about whether it would benefit your planned next steps. Your teachers will advise you on this decision.

What is Clearing? In simple terms, it is how universities fill empty spots on their courses. Most of the time, this is through finding students who have decided to go to university after the application deadline, or students who've not got the results they needed to get into their first-choice course and are looking for alternative courses or universities.

Some universities announce whether they have places available when Clearing opens, while others wait until results day, Thursday 17 August. Can you re-apply to a previously rejected university? Clearing allows you to apply to any university with vacancies, even if they rejected you the first time round.

From your "matches", you are able to express an interest in a course, and then the university or college can contact you. If none of the suggestions take your fancy, you can still browse all the other available Clearing courses on the UCAS website.
