The origin story, retold Saturday, began at Lafayette High School and on the sandlots of Brooklyn, detoured to the University of Cincinnati – where Koufax was an invited walkon for basketball and decided to go out for baseball as well because, as he said, “The baseball team was going to New Orleans … and I decided, I want to go to New Orleans” – and then veered back to Brooklyn and Ebbets Field, came to Los Angeles with the Dodgers in 1958 and ultimately reached Cooperstown.
