This was LAFC’s second try at a CONCACAF Champions League final, the first being a loss to Tigres UANL in the pandemic-delayed final in December 2020.

That time, it was a one-match final on neutral turf. This one, the traditional two-leg final with the second match on their turf and in front of their vaunted 3252 supporters section, seemed a more realistic opportunity, especially after Denis Bouanga’s late goal in last week’s first match trimmed the margin to 2-1.

That said, León was the better team throughout both legs of this final. The final stats may have had LAFC with more shots , shots on goal and possession percentage , but León was more effective. LAFC captain Carlos Vela was not at his best, and few others stepped up. The other aspect, of course, is that it’s still an imbalanced relationship in many ways between MLS and the rest of the world, and probably will remain that way for a long time as long as the North American league maintains its arcane salary cap rules and insists on playing in what the rest of the world considers its off-season.

But this isn’t an ending for LAFC. Far from it. The defending champs, who have 7 wins and 4 draws in 12 MLS matches this season, have also played the fewest league games of any MLS team, partly because of a couple of games that were rescheduled specifically because of the CCL. But that’s deceptive, too, because they’ve played 22 all told when this tournament and U.S. Open Cup games were added.
