Alabama is working to bring the Appalachian Trail into the state
Alabama conservationists and state officials are looking to formally extend the famed Appalachian Trail into the state with the burgeoning “AT2AL” movement.from Maine to Georgia’s Springer Mountain. The trail was originally imagined as spanning the entire length of the Appalachian Mountains, which would extend it into Alabama, but the Alabama leg never materialized.
Hikers who support expanding the trail can purchase “AT2AL” stickers, t-shirts, hats and medallions at the Cheaha State Park camp store, with proceeds going to Alabama State Parks.Alabama State Parks Director Greg Lein said that many Appalachian Trail through hikers already begin their trek in Alabama, but incorporating the Pinhoti into the AT would bring more tourism and attention to the state.“That is really the point behind our efforts,” Lein said in a news release.
“We should bring the Appalachian Trail to Cheaha State Park, a worthy peer to [Maine’s] Baxter State Park, both holding the highest point in their respective states,” Hayes said in the news release.
